Values: Meaning, Presence in Fairy Tales and Beyond

The Fairy Tale Museum and the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, as part of the project VAST: Values Across Space & Time, funded by the Horizon 2020 Program of the European Union are running a survey which focuses on assessing experts’ perceptions of values present in fairy tales, in order to examine how these values are interpreted and communicated through the various activities and exhibits they run. In addition, the survey explores what digitization types would be most useful to experts and stakeholders in interpreting and communicating values.

Participation in the survey is voluntary and all collected responses are anonymous; there is no way to link any response with a particular person, so please answer as honestly as you feel comfortable doing so.

You are free to stop and exit the survey at any moment if you do not wish to continue.

All the collected answers will be used for research purposes and for guiding the development of the VAST platform to best meet the needs of experts (e.g., museum educators, curators, story tellers).

The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

The VAST project envisions to bring European values to the forefront by using cutting edge technologies to create a digital platform and a knowledge base which will include narratives from three areas: theatre (focusing on ancient Greek Drama), science (focusing on Scientific Revolution and natural-philosophy documents of the 17th century) and folklore (focusing on folktales/fairy tales). Through advanced techniques and digital tools, researchers will study how the meaning of specific values has been expressed, transformed, and appropriated through time, going back to the stories that helped shape part of the European culture. VAST will examine narratives and user experiences that represent significant moments of European culture and history such as the classical period, and the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century, when the conceptual, methodological and institutional foundations of modern science were first established, to the modern era.

Things you need to know

1. Research Purpose: In this survey we look at experts’ perceptions of values in fairy tales. We hope to better understand how key members of the museum community interpret and communicate values through various activities and exhibits. Finally, we want to learn what type of digitization efforts, would be most useful in the process of interpreting and communicating values.
2. What kind of information/data will you be asked to provide? Feedback in anonymized format: By participating in this survey, you will be asked to provide your opinions on topics related to values, their role in your work activity, importance, etc. The opinions provided will always remain anonymous and for all purposes including publications and further sharing as no personal identifiable data will be used.
3. Why will your responses be processed? Your responses, along with the responses of other participants will be analysed to help us learn about the experts’ perceptions of values in fairy tales, and the remaining areas of research we described above.
4. Voluntary Participation: Your participation is voluntary. You do not have to take part if you do not want to. You may leave the group at any time for any reason.
5. Consent Withdrawal:
  5.1. Participation: You may revoke your consent to participate at any time for any reason and exit the survey.
  5.2. Anonymous survey data: The option to delete your anonymous responses is limited, due to our inability to connect a specific survey to a particular person, to ensure the anonymity of the responses.
6. Risks: There are no known risks involved in participating in this survey beyond those involved in regular life, and the use of electronic devices to provide the answers.
7. Benefits: Individual participants probably will not benefit personally from participating in the survey, but this research may help increase the awareness of the values present in fairy tales, aid the researcher in providing helpful online tools for future activities, and contribute to the progress in research on values.
8. Third parties: VAST may share the anonymous surveys collected in this project and/or the results via the VAST repository.
9. Storage: VAST shall store your anonymous survey for an unlimited period of time, on the VAST platform.
